Sandy Atwood, MSN, FNP-BC Family Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Executive Director

Sandy is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with a focus on patient centered care.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and family studies from Wheaton College, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from The Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions and a master’s degree in nursing from Duke University.  She completed her residency at CariCare Family Health Services on St. Thomas, VI.  Sandy treats patients of all ages and genders for a wide variety of acute and chronic issues as well as preventive care. Sandy also serves as Clinical Executive Director and President of the Founding Board of Directors for Island Health.

Originally from Boston, MA, Sandy relocated to St. John in 2003.  As a healthcare provider in the Territory, Sandy has seen, first-hand, the lack of affordable health care options.  Seeing how difficult it can be for patients to pay for the care they need, how often patients defer care due to financial means and the negative effects this has on one’s health, combined with the extremely high numbers of uninsured individuals on island, motivated Sandy to come up with a solution.

In 2012, she began the process of researching and developing the best option to provide affordable and quality, primary health care services to St. John.  Based on this, Island Health & Wellness Center came to be. Sandy is the founder and executive director of The Baby Grove, LLC; a Boston based private company that provides maternal/child health nursing care to families in the home.  Sandy acts as a healthcare consultant, providing trainings, guidance and assistance with regulation adherence to numerous childcare centers.  In addition, Sandy is a certified birth and postpartum doula, a certified breastfeeding counselor, an American Heart Association CPR instructor, a certified (MA) infant through preschool teacher and a certified Reiki I practitioner. Sandy is excited to be offering patient-focused and affordable health care on St John and for the growth and opportunities that Island Health & Wellness can provide for the health of the community.
